Dick Teague, head of AMC styling, had originally lost his battle to have the Marlin become a true luxury sports car - on the Ambassador chassis. He felt that the placement of the design on the shorter Classic body did not allow the proper look and flow of the roof curve at the rear where rear passenger head room would have been compromised, thus removing the claim of a six-passenger sports luxury car. In 1967 he got his wish, with the Marlin moved to the Ambassador body. Thus the 1967 Marlin was longer, lower and wider the 2" increase in wheelbase.

The car retained its distinctive fastback roof styling and semi-elliptical side window openings, but it was basically an Ambassador with a fastback roof as none of the Ambassador chrome, grille design or other cues were changed. The Marlin grew 6.5" longer, had 6" more wheelbase, and was 4" wider, which added 300 lbs. to its weight.
